Titanium Anodizing Color Chart: How Each Color Is Made

Anodized titanium is the only “colored metal” in body jewelry that never chips, peels or fades – because the color is not a coating at all. Understanding how it works helps you sell it, QC it, and answer the one question every customer asks: “will the color come off?”

The physics in one paragraph

Titanium exposed to air grows a transparent oxide layer a few nanometers thick. Anodizing applies voltage to grow that layer to a precise thickness. The layer is transparent; light bounces off both its top and the metal beneath, and the two reflections interfere – cancelling some wavelengths and amplifying others. The “color” is interference, exactly like a soap bubble. There is no dye, no plating, nothing that can wear off.

The voltage-to-color chart

Voltage (approx.) Color Notes
~10V Bronze / champagne Most subtle; popular on men’s styles
~15V Purple / violet Fast-fading segment under UV? No – still permanent; most-requested pastel
~20V Deep blue Bestseller color overall
~25V Light blue / cyan Reads almost turquoise on polished surfaces
~30V Yellow / gold The “gold look” without gold prices
~45V Rose / magenta Small process window – buy from experienced anodizers
~60-90V Green Requires the highest, most controlled voltage

Beyond ~100V the oxide breaks down and the surface whitens/etches, so the palette is finite – one reason multi-color rainbow finishes are made by controlled voltage sweeps.

Why this matters for wholesale buyers

  • Zero plating complaints. The color is the metal. Swimsuits, sweat, hand sanitizer, autoclave cycles – none of it removes interference color.
  • Consistent batches need good equipment. Colors drift if voltage control is sloppy. Ask for batch photos before shipping; TitanPierce ships QC photos of anodized batches on request.
  • Re-anodizing is possible. A scratched piece can be re-finished to original color, something plated jewelry can never offer.

QC checks on arrival

Check color uniformity under daylight (not warm shop light), verify no “rainbow smear” where a uniform color was intended, and confirm the finish inside threads too – a quality anodizer treats assembled internals. If a batch is off-spec, it shows on the very first hundred pieces.

Selling tip

Display the same design in 4-5 anodized colors on one card. Color choice is what converts browsers, and because the finish is permanent you can honestly warranty it – something no plated competitor can match. Compare with plated and PVD finishes, or browse the anodized titanium studs catalog.
